Indian Status Information

What is Indian Status?

Indian status is the legal recognition of a person as a registered Indian under the Indian Act. Individuals who are registered—also known as status Indians—may be eligible for a variety of benefits, programs, rights, and services provided by federal, provincial, or territorial governments.

Applying for Indian Status

If you believe you may be eligible for Indian status and are ready to apply, start by reviewing the eligibility criteria under Are You Eligible to Apply?. Researching your family history may also help determine which application form you need, which can save processing time.

Once registered, your name will be added to the Indian Register.

Benefits and Services

To learn more about what you may be eligible for as a status Indian, visit the following resources:

Registering Your Child

We strongly encourage parents to register their children for Indian status as early as possible.

To do so:

  1. Order your child’s long-form birth certificate (this version includes both parents' names).

  2. Do not send commemorative birth certificates—these are not accepted by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). Only original birth certificates or official documents from Vital Statistics (such as declarations of live birth) will be accepted.

  3. Provide the original certificate to our office. We will include it with your child’s registration. ISC will return it to you in approximately 3–4 weeks.

Please note:

  • Due to remote work and processing delays, it may take 6 months or longer to complete a new registration.

  • Unregistered children may face issues accessing healthcare services such as prescriptions or doctor visits. To avoid complications, we strongly advise registering your child as soon as possible.

Membership

The Membership Department serves Sik-E-Dakh Band Members in matters relating to registration of births, marriages, deaths, and legal name changes as well as the administration of status cards.

Reminders

  • After any event - birth, death, marriage, divorce, name change - it takes 6-9 months to complete a change of record at the Regional Office.

  • It is important for parents to register babies to the Band as soon as they receive their birth certificate for vital statistics. Once registration is complete, the child is entitled to medical benefits.

  • Adults renew status cards every five years, children every three years
